What worked well?
The hands on activities were great. I feel like they got more out of this senses unit than in the past years. They loved the listening walk and the observation walks.

My students really feel like scientists using their notebooks and having our scientist meetings:)

My students really enjoyed the observation walks too. We used the sunglasses from the Looking Book and they seemed so engaged at noticing little things.

The whole unit went well. The children enjoyed and learned a lot from their observations and recordings in their lab book.

The science notebooks really helped the children have ideas to share for the scientist meetings. The "hands-on" "real life" experiences made the lessons meaningful for each child.

What problems did you have?

No problems...it would be nice if the tasting items could be sent to us...it meant a trip to the grocery store.

It was hard for the students to come up with words to describe how things smell.
(what about providing them with a word bank of smelling words?-- or comparing them to known smells ie. pancakes...)

My children used the pictures at the top of the smelling page to help them with the smell of the extracts. I think next year I would like to include real foods in a container to smell and identify

Modifications? Suggestions? Changes?

We did a book after our listening walk called I went walking...

I have a pdf of The 5 Senses and do not remember where I got it. If anyone would like it, I can email it to you (dspitzer).

The Dr. Jean "Five Senses Song" was a class favorite. We sang it almost every day!

Additional Materials Needed
Think every teacher needs to have their own copy of What is a Scientist?

I agree with the book What is a Scientist? It would be helpful to be able to refer to it all year long.

Additional Lessons to be added?
